4 hour craft session (9/1/14)

Thanks for all your letters!

I feel like I’ve come a long way in 9 months. It’s not hard to be bold when I know that the message we are sharing is true and it’s why this person is here on the earth. And really I love these people. I loved everyone in my other two areas, but here it feels different. I know that when I do come back I’m going to come to Zihua to visit everyone, and also to finally go to the beach.  Someday when we are all rich we should come here on vacation.

I feel bad I don’t have photos this week. We were stuck in the house half of the week because I had a little cold and Hermana Camarillo didn’t want us to leave the house.  We did some crafts and I slept a lot. I’m sending one picture of Hermana Betti after her 4 hour craft session.

9-1-14 betti craft session

This week we were able to find a couple of people who are super great. We were able to find another less active member who was baptized with her daughter but then her daughter got sick and she lost her and then she became inactive. We found her and she told us that she knows she needs to come back to the church because if she wants to live with her daughter after this life she needs to live the gospel.  She has a son who’s not a member, so I think we will be working with this family a lot.

It’s starting to cool down here a little. We had rain the past 4 days. Now the only problem is how to dry clothes after we wash them. I’m going to take pictures of my house to send you; it’s actually super nice and big. I feel like we live in the great and spacious building.

I love you all

9 Meses! (8/25/14)

This week I celebrated 9 months! I’m half way done already. It honestly doesn’t feel like it and it’s kinda sad that it’s half way finished but in 9 months I get to see you all again!

This week was great. We had a surprise conference with president. It was just our district but it was good. We talked a lot about the less active members in our wards and how they are just as important as finding new people to teach. Our goal and purpose is white clothes. White clothes for baptism or for the temple. The less active members just need a little help and a friend to help them come back. They need to see the blessings of the gospel in their lives. So last week and this week we have been working more with the less active members of our ward. We had quite a few at church yesterday and it was so great. We went to pick them up and when we got to the church everyone was so happy to see them. We are working with the bishop to get callings for them; it’s pretty exciting.

Ruben and Armando are going to receive the priesthood soon and I’m pretty sure I’m going to cry when they pass the sacrament for the first time.

8-25-14 cute familyIn this picture, you can’t tell but the little boy has a shirt from Pikes Place Market and we were all pretty excited about that. This family is great. They live in the house that we have to climb the big hill too.

I hope everyone is doing great in school. I miss you all!

2 Baptisms (8/18/14)

Hola todos.

Ruben/Hermano Armando Baptism

Ruben/Hermano Armando Baptism

This week was super super great, we worked super hard. Hermana Betti was sick with some super random weird infection in her stomach, but despite that, our number for total lessons was higher than before. We also taught Hermano Armando all the lessons in about 5 days.  It was great he understood everything and was super ready to learn.

we had their baptism Saturday! It was so so great. Everyone came; all of their friends and they were so happy. Ruben, the tall one, had the dad of his friend baptize him, because that’s how he came to know the church.  Hermano Armando, his counselor from EFY, came from Lazaro to baptize him. He’s blind. (he is not blinking in all the photos.) Their relationship is really special, because Armando doesn’t have any support from his family.  His counselor is kind of his older brother. Ruben doesn’t have support from his family either, but it’s really special because they really have a determination to learn and change things in their lives because they know the church in true.

Some more great news… President told us, at this last zone conference, that we are now allowed to play soccer and sports! But only with other missionaries; not with members and elders and hermanas can’t play together. That kind of means I’ll probably never play soccer here, but I have the option now.

The mission President also told us that he has been thinking about letting us go to the temple. The temple is out of our zone and he is going to start sending the zones in Guadalajara first. So from now on if we are lucky enough to have an area in Jalisco, we can take a day and go to the temple.  We are all pretty excited, except for the fact that we are furthest that you can get from Guadalajara and it might take a while before we actually get to go.

Thank you mom and nana and papa for your help. I’ve been working on filling out everything in my family history, and I love doing this.

I hope everyone is having a great week with starting school.

Les quiero mucho.

Things to know if you’re going to Mexico.

  • You don’t need to spray all your clothes with the strong bug repellent. You’re going to wash your clothes so much it won’t matter.
  • Bring more clothes than your call packet says. It’s harder to find nice not expensive clothes, especially tops.
  • Bring a sweatshirt and jacket you can wear proselytizing, during the winter. It still gets cold.
  • Buy a pocket sized yellow dictionary in the MTC on main campus.
  • You only need a converter if you have something with 3 prongs that needs to be plugged in.
  • Bring your English hymn book and be ready to teach your companion English.
  • Don’t buy new scriptures in English before your mission. You won’t really use them because you give you new ones in Spanish.
  • In the MTC buy the little books of Mormon in English to gift to your companions.
  • Buy the scripture cases in the MTC and also the scripture tabs that work with preach my gospel.
  • Use mesh garments.
  • You can find contact solution here.

Things to know before the mission.

  • Always bring blazers even if your call packet doesn’t say so, you will need them for zone meetings and interviews with your president.
  • Buy demi Downeast shirts and bring a couple because they get worn out fast.
  • Bring skirts that cover your knees when you sit down. You won’t be comfortable in skirts that come to your knees or just below when standing.
  • Bring your own blanket to the MTC. Also bring another smaller blanket to use during the mission when you have to travel. Buses are always cold.
  • Bring photos of your baptism, your family, and your temple.
  • Bring other photos of temples, quotes, and your family to decorate your planners with every transfer.
  • Tell everybody about “Dear Elder” it’s free to the MTC.
  • Memorize the missionary purpose and the first vision in the language of your mission.
  • In the MTC buy a little preach my gospel and the packet of scripture tabs that work with preach my gospel.

Feliz Cumpleaños Papa (8/11/14)

Well, funny story, I actually did get a little sick from drinking the water from the bag. It was only 2 pesos and we are poor. I didn’t get super sick, we still went out to teach, but this last week I bought a empanada from some kids that climbed onto our bus. It was really good; it was coconut. The next day we were in the house all day because I was super sick. I learned my lesson. My whole district knows the story so when we went for our zone conference this week everyone was trying to get me to buy another empanada.  Even the random strangers behind me were getting into it, everyone was telling me how I should eat one because I was in Mexico and the kids wouldn’t leave and just kept persisting. I think you had to be there but it was really funny, the whole bus was looking back at us at all the commotion.

Mom, I think my favorite food here is just the Mexican taquitos with the lettuce, cheese, salsa, guacamole (which I like now) and tomatoes (which I like now also). But really I’m just in love with tortillas. I’m going to make then when I come home because I’m pretty sure I can’t eat a meal without them. Also we are going to make fresh salsa every night for dinner. I’m still learning and collecting recipes so we can have Mexican fiestas every day.

We need to but a really nice hammock. I would buy one here but it’s kind of heavy. But I think our house needs one. We can hook one end to where we have the swing in the living room and the other to something else.

This week was super super great. The youth just got back from EFY. They all came back with ganas to be missionaries. We saw a couple of them in the street Saturday when they got back and it was great. They were like practically jumping up and down telling us all about it. 2 non- members went and came back asking when they can be baptized. We had a date set for one of them for his baptism but because he was gone all week we couldn’t teach him everything. So this week we are teaching him all 5 lessons. It’s a lot but he said he needs to be baptized this weekend because he can’t wait.  We are also teaching his friend who is a little older. They are both going to be baptized this Saturday and both want to serve full time missions! We are just super happy.

Yesterday we had 8 investigadores at church and all but them but one have dates to be baptized. For two weeks in a row we have had the most investigadores at church out of everyone in our zone. So our area is doing really good and we are happy. This week we also found 13 new people to teach and put dates almost every day. Missionary life is great. Thank you for all your prayers!

This is a picture of a really scary spider I found.

This is a picture of the trek we take to visit some investigadores. It’s a family we found who are progressing but they live wayyyy up in the hills where there are no roads for cars. It was actually a miracle we found their house the first time. It’s like climbing a mountain, Hermana Betti only fell once.

I have a lot to share just because it’s been two weeks.

Sleeping on the bus

Sleeping on the bus

When we go to Guadalajara it’s about 150 dollars to go there and back by bus. It’s super nice. For 8 hours we pretty much talk and sleep, it’s pretty relaxing. There is a screen in front of us and if we weren’t missionaries we could watch movies, but we don’t. We went to Guadalajara this past week. We are 6 hermanas from Lazaro so it was fun.

Chivas pillows

Our pillows are Chivas pillows; they are the Mexico soccer team. It’s a good conversation starter. We found a couple future investigadores using them.

Also I’m sending come photos of things that I realized are normal to me now but I never told you about them. Everyone here has hammocks.

This week the elders in our ward had a baptism of a future missionary. I was asked to give a talk about 2 minutes before it started but that’s pretty normal.

This week we were lost up in the hills and found a little Catholic church and on their banner they had one of our photos of Christ; but it’s OK, we can share.

8-4-14 juntos

Today is cambios but we are staying here. Only one elder is leaving and we are combining our district with another. So juntas somos Zihua. Forever.

It turns out that our investigator Pedro is a member. He was baptized about 10 years ago. So we are helping to reactivating them. Our area is progressing. Yesterday we had 6 investigadores at church and 5 have dates to be baptized.  It’s super exciting and we are working super hard every day. My shoes are evidence of that.

I love all the pictures you sent me! The color fest and your hike look like fun! When I got back we have to do it all again! And you went to see the Blue Angels?!! Why do you do everything fun without me?! It’s only been my dream to go back and see the Blue Angels since I was like 7. But it’s OK. I forgive you all.

Have fun this week. Stay safe. Love you!
